Telecommunications<br \/>\nequipment used to support these wide varieties of systems that rely<br \/>\non the electronic transport of information require an effective<br \/>\nbuilding infrastructure. This infrastructure encompasses spaces,<br \/>\npathways, cables, connecting hardware, and a bonding and grounding<br \/>\nsystem. For reliable operation of any telecommunications equipment<br \/>\nor system, bonding and grounding (earthing) is essential \u2013<br \/>\nregardless of the cabling technology or media. This Standard<br \/>\nfocuses on the bonding and grounding portion of this<br \/>\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE \u2013 The North American term &#034;grounding&#034; that is used in this<br \/>\nStandard is equivalent to the international term &#034;earthing&#034;.<\/p>\n<p>The bonding and grounding approach in this Standard is intended<br \/>\nto work in concert with premises cabling specified within TIA<br \/>\nEngineering Committee TR-42. The requirements specified in this<br \/>\nStandard in conjunction with a basic understanding of bonding and<br \/>\ngrounding concepts and methodologies will aid in achieving a<br \/>\nreliable solution when applied to telecommunications<br \/>\ninstallations.<\/p>\n<p>Several sources of bonding and grounding information exist<br \/>\nwithin the telecommunications industry. For example, the NEC\u00ae<br \/>\nspecifies requirements regarding the safety aspects of bonding and<br \/>\ngrounding of equipment and systems. Yet another example is that of<br \/>\nATIS 0600318, <i>Electrical Protection Applied to<br \/>\nTelecommunications Network Plant at Entrances to Customer<br \/>\nStructures or Buildings<\/i>, which provides information on bonding<br \/>\nand grounding to support electrical protection considerations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this Standard is to enable and encourage the<br \/>\nplanning, design, and installation of generic telecommunications<br \/>\nbonding and grounding systems within premises with or without prior<br \/>\nknowledge of the telecommunications systems that will subsequently<br \/>\nbe installed. While primarily intended to provide direction for the<br \/>\ndesign of new buildings, this Standard may be used for existing<br \/>\nbuilding renovations or retrofit treatment.
