GPRS-136 integrates the TIA\/EIA-136 air<br \/>\nlink with the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) as defined by the<br \/>\nEuropean Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).<br \/>\nSpecifically, GPRS-136 supports a packet data service on the<br \/>\nfollowing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TIA\/EIA-136 30-kHz channels (designated as 136+).<\/li>\n<li>TIA\/EIA-136 200-kHz channels for high speed data (384 kbit\/s)<br \/>\naccommodating high mobility (designated as 136HS Outdoor).<\/li>\n<li>TIA\/EIA-136 1600-kHz channels for very high speed data (2<br \/>\nMbits\/s) in low mobility applications (designated as 136HS<br \/>\nIndoor).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the packet data service available with GPRS-136,<br \/>\na GPRS-136 subscriber shall also have the capability to receive<br \/>\nexisting TIA\/EIA-136 and TIA\/EIA-41 services (e.g., circuit<br \/>\nswitched voice services, and short messaging services), provided<br \/>\nthe subscriber&#039;s mobile station supports both circuit-mode and<br \/>\npacket-mode.<\/p>\n<p>GPRS-136 supports two new classes of mobile stations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Class B136 \u2013 This MS class supports TIA\/EIA-136 circuit<br \/>\nservice, GPRS-136 packet service, TIA\/EIA-136 teleservices, and<br \/>\nTIA\/EIA-136 functions (e.g., Intelligent Roaming). A Class B136<br \/>\nmobile station can invoke packet-data transactions or circuit calls<br \/>\nsequentially but not simultaneously. The selection of the<br \/>\nappropriate service is performed automatically.<\/li>\n<li>When a mobile station has successfully attached to both packet<br \/>\nand circuit service, a packet data transaction or circuit call may<br \/>\nbe invoked by the network or the mobile station.<\/li>\n<li>If a circuit call is invoked while a packet data transaction is<br \/>\nactive, the mobile station shall suspend packet service and proceed<br \/>\nwith the circuit call. Upon termination of the circuit call, the<br \/>\nmobile station shall request the packet service be resumed. The<br \/>\nnetwork shall either grant or reject the resume request.<\/li>\n<li>Class C136 \u2013 This MS class supports GPRS packet service and<br \/>\nTIA\/EIA-136 functions for Intelligent Roaming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>GPRS-136 allows the service subscriber to send and receive data<br \/>\nin an end-to-end packet mode, without utilizing network resources<br \/>\nin circuit mode. GPRS-136 enables the efficient use of network<br \/>\nresources for packet data applications. For example, GPRS-136 is<br \/>\nwell suited for applications that exhibit one or more of the<br \/>\nfollowing characteristics:<\/p>\n<p>intermittent, non-periodic (i.e., bursty) data transmissions,<br \/>\nwhere the time between successive transmissions greatly exceeds the<br \/>\naverage transfer delay;<\/p>\n<p>frequent transmissions of small volumes of data (e.g.,<br \/>\ntransactions consisting of less than 500 octets occurring at a rate<br \/>\nof up to several transactions per minute);<\/p>\n<p>infrequent transmission of larger volumes of data (e.g.,<br \/>\ntransactions consisting of several kilobytes occurring at a rate of<br \/>\nup to several transactions per hour).<\/p>\n<p>Based on standardized network protocols supported by GPRS-136, a<br \/>\nGPRS-136 network administration may offer (or support) a set of<br \/>\nadditional services. These services are outside the scope of this<br \/>\nstandard; however, a number of possible point-to-point interactive<br \/>\nteleservices include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>retrieval services that provide the capability of accessing<br \/>\ninformation stored in database centers. The information is sent to<br \/>\nthe user on demand only.
