This part of IEC 61558 deals with the safety of safety isolating transformers<\/b> for general applications and power supply units<\/b> incorporating safety isolating transformers<\/b> for general applications. Transformers<\/b> incorporating electronic circuits<\/b> are also covered by this standard.<\/p>\n

\n

NOTE 1 Safety includes electrical, thermal and mechanical aspects.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Unless otherwise specified, from here onward, the term transformer<\/b> covers safety isolating transformers<\/b> for general applications and power supply units<\/b> incorporating safety isolating transformers<\/b> for general applications.<\/p>\n

\n

NOTE 2 For power supply units<\/b> (linear) this part is applicable. For switch mode power supply units, IEC 61558-2-16 is applicable together with this part.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This part is applicable to stationary<\/b> or portable,<\/b> single-phase or polyphase, air-cooled (natural or forced) independent<\/b> or associated dry- type transformers.<\/b> The windings may be encapsulated or non-encapsulated.<\/p>\n

The rated supply voltage<\/b> does not exceed 1 100 V a.c., and the rated supply frequency<\/b> and the internal operating frequencies<\/b> do not exceed 500 Hz.<\/p>\n

The rated output<\/b> does not exceed:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    10 kVA for single-phase transformers;<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    16 kVA for polyphase transformers.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This part is applicable to transformers<\/b> without limitation of the rated output<\/b> subject to an agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.<\/p>\n

    \n

    NOTE 3 Transformers<\/b> intended to supply distribution networks are not included in the scope.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    The no-load output voltage<\/b> or the rated output voltage<\/b> does not exceed 50 V a.c. or 120 V ripple-free d.c.<\/p>\n

    This part is not applicable to external circuits and their components intended to be connected to the input terminals and output terminals of the transformers.<\/b><\/p>\n

    Transformers<\/b> covered by this part are used in applications where double or reinforced insulation<\/b> between circuits is required by the installation rules or by the end product standard.<\/p>\n

    \n

    NOTE 4 Attention is drawn to the following:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      \n
    • \n

      for transformers<\/b> intended to be used in vehicles, on board ships, and aircraft, additional requirements (from other applicable standards, national rules, etc.) may be necessary;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      measures to protect the enclosure<\/b> and the components inside the enclosure against external influences such as fungus, vermin, termites, solar-radiation, and icing should also be considered;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      the different conditions for transportation, storage, and operation of the transformers<\/b> should also be considered;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      additional requirements in accordance with other appropriate standards and national rules may be applicable to transformers<\/b> intended for use in special environments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      NOTE 5 Future technological development of transformers<\/b> may necessitate a need to increase the upper limit of the frequencies, until then this part may be used as a guidance document.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
