In order to simplify the<br \/>\nspecification of the protocol, their operation is defined with<br \/>\nrespect to an abstract <i>underlying service<\/i>, rather than any<br \/>\nparticular subnetwork service. This abstract underlying service<br \/>\nconsists of a single <i>SN-UNITDATA<\/i> primitive that conveys<br \/>\nthe source and destination subnetwork point of attachment<br \/>\naddresses, a SUBNETWORK QUALITY-OF-SERVICE parameter, and a minimum<br \/>\nnumber of octets of user data.<\/p>\n<p>The Subnetwork Dependent Convergence functions providing this<br \/>\nunderlying service are constrained by the specific characteristics<br \/>\nof a particular subnetwork service (<i>e.g<\/i>., CDPD Mobile Data<br \/>\nLink Protocol) and by the assumptions made by the<br \/>\nsubnetwork-independent protocol providing Connectionless Network<br \/>\nService (<i>e.g<\/i>., IP or CLNP).
