This TIA Standard contains requirements necessary for the
\nsynchronization of TDM based PISNs. Timing within a digital private
\nnetwork needs to be controlled carefully to ensure that the rate of
\noccurrences of slips between equipment within the PISN, and the
\npublic switched networks is sufficiently low not to affect unduly
\nthe performance of voice transmissions, or the accuracy or
\nthroughput (if errored data require re-transmission) of non-voice
\nservices. The clock accuracy classification considered in this
\nstandard is based on North American stratum levels.<\/p>\n
Requirements are also based upon the interconnection of digital
\nprivate telecommunication networks via digital facilities in the
\npublic (switched or packet) telecommunication networks.<\/p>\n
Synchronization in packet based networks is based on time
\nstamping or timing protocols like Network Time Protocol (NTP). At
\npresent, time stamping based synchronization is used in ATM
\nnetworks. NTP is broadly used in the Internet to synchronize
\ndistributed clocks to each other or to time server having an
\naccurate clock (e.g. a server connected to GPS receiver). In NTP
\nbased synchronization, clock offset and skew would be estimated
\nbased on one-way delay measurement across the network, the accuracy
\nof synchronization depends on the network paths between two hosts.
\nThis TIA standard does not address the synchronization methods
\napplicable to packet based networks.<\/p>\n
This Standard is one of a series of technical standards on
\ntelecommunications networks and with its companion standards fills
\na recognized need in the telecommunications industry brought about
\nby the increasing use of digital equipment and facilities in
\nprivate networks. It is useful to anyone engaged in the manufacture
\nof digital customer premises equipment (CPE) for private network
\napplications, and to those purchasing, operating or applying
\ndigital CPE to digital facilities for PISNs.<\/p>\n
This Standard establishes technical criteria necessary in the
\ndesign of a synchronization plan for a PISN. Compliance with these
\nrequirements would be expected to result in a quality PISN
